Sharing Web Resources II

The section of the website that seemed particularly relevant to my current professional development would be the sections on the developing child and health & safety. I recently went from being a two year old teacher to being an infant room teacher.  Until I was placed in this position, I did not know too much about infants so this website has helped me a lot.

The website provides information about options to pay for childcare  and also information about finding childcare in ten counties in Kentucky.  This, in my opinion, adds to my understanding of how economists support the early childhood field.

From this website, I have gained a lot of insight about issues and trends in the early childhood field. One thing I learned was about booster seat laws. Since I don't currently have a child, I have not paid much attention to booster seat laws. I did not know that in Kentucky, children between 40 and 50 inches tall and who are younger than 7 had to be restrained in a child booster seat or the parent would receive a $30.00 fine. There are several articles on the website as well that are helpful such as Consumer safety tips, preventing SIDS, and sleeping tips for families with small children.

This is by far the most helpful and informative website I have studied.

Childhood Poverty in Kyrgyzstan

Honestly I did not know that Kyrgyzstan even existed until this assignment. One thing that learned was that 60 percent of its citizen made their living from agriculture.  The poverty level in Kyrgyzstan has lead to approximately 24 percent of the children working in full and part time jobs. The children were doing jobs such as working on family farms and domestic services.

An estimated 7 percent of children in Kyrgyzstan are malnourished and about 14 percent of them do not have access to health services.

What can we do to help eliminate poverty in the United States and all around the world?

Establishing Professional Contacts

I have been waiting patiently to hear back from some professionals that I contacted. Since I have not heard anything at this time, I decided to post this response anyway.

Sharing Web Resources

I currently subscribe to the Western Kentucky Child Care Resource and Referral. Their link is http://www.wku.edu/ccrr/. The focus of this organization is to inform parents about finding child care and what to look for when researching centers.  They also have links for upcoming trainings for anyone interested, primarily educators. I like this organization for multiple reasons, one of which are the links they provide. There are links for other related groups such as Zero to Three, National Association for the Education of Young Children, and Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky. Sherri Meyer, my instructor or my CDA, is also one of the founders of this organization. She and several others, including Dr. Amy Hood-Hooten periodically update the site with current topics or articles they have written. One such article about bath safety written by Dr. Hood-Hooten.

I have used this website for several class assignments because it is current, up-to-date and easy to navigate.
